The Brussels Ia Regulation lays down rules governing international jurisdiction and the recognition and enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters. The Regulation is the most essential legal instrument on European civil procedural law. Brussels Ia amended and replaced the previous Brussels I Regulation. Its provisions apply to court proceedings which commenced on 10 January 2015, as well as to court settlements and authentic instruments concluded or established from this date. The Brussels Ia Regulation applies to all member states apart from Denmark. Denmark adopted the Brussels I provisions in an Agreement with the EU of 19 October 2005 (OJ 2005 L 299, 62) and confirmed its adherence to the amendments of Brussels Ia in a letter to the Commission, dated 20 December 2012 (OJ 2013, L 79, 4).
