The Brussels IIa Regulation 2201/2003 ("Brussels IIa") of 27 November 2003 governs jurisdiction as well as the recognition and enforcement of judgments in matrimonial matters and matters of parental responsibility. It applies to all Member States except from Denmark. Brussels IIa applies from 1 March 2005 to the then existing Member States, for Romania and Bulgaria from 1 January 2007 and for Croatia from 1 July 2013. Brussels IIa replaced the Brussels II Regulation 1347/2000 of 29 May 2000, which only applied for a few years from 1 March 2001 until Brussels IIa came into force and began to apply. In matrimonial matters, related case-law on parallel provisions in the Brussels II Regulation 1347/2000 help interpret relevant provisions of Brussels IIa.
